Our contributions and goals
for a green future

Soil, water and air are important components of our ecosystem. But they are exposed to all manner of stress and pollution from human use. The increasing consumption of land has resulted in soil sealing in our landscape. The loss of natural topsoil results in the disappearance of a crucial habitat for biodiversity which is provided by plants, insects and microorganisms. The natural water cycle is interrupted. Precious tree populations and natural green spaces are disappearing. Furthermore, this impacts the quality of life due to heat, particulate matter and exhaust fumes in the air of our towns and cities, as well as artificial gray backdrops.

Our vision – A world with green cities, clean air, permeable soil, as well as groundwater of good quality. The temperature in cities is regulated as rainwater is absorbed and subsequently released, as if by a sponge. At the same time, this helps reduce flooding. Particulate matter and CO2 are absorbed and transformed by soil life, plants and trees. Green roofs, facades and parking spaces as well as the planting of trees fill our view with color. They provide us with quality of life and closeness to nature.

Let us work together to create a green planet using sustainable products that integrate nature’s cycles instead of disrupting them. A better future – for our future generations.

100% post-consumer recycling
Living the circular economy

Post-consumer recycling is on everyone's lips these days. Since 1997, TTE® MultidrainPLUS has been made from 100% post-consumer plastics from German households. In 2021, we recycled around 10 million bags of plastic waste for TTE®.

By recycling, we avoid the release of more than 35,000 tonnes of CO2 that would otherwise be produced in waste incineration plants. At the end of its life, the product cycle can be closed - new TTE® elements are made out of old ones.

Did you know that in Germany, only about 16% of plastic waste has been materially recycled in recent years (Source: Plastikatlas 2019)? The rest is difficult to turn into a new product due to inhomogeneity or incorrect packaging design or the degree of pollution. Therefore, most of our household plastic waste still ends up in incinerators or is exported abroad in an uncontrolled way.

TTE® MultidrainPLUS consists of precisely these plastic fractions that are difficult to recycle. Know-how and state-of-the-art equipment make a recycling process possible.

Together with you, we make a real contribution to environmental and climate protection through TTE®.

All linearity must come to an end - achieving a sustainable future with the circular economy

The mass production of plastics is causing unprecedented environmental pollution with far-reaching consequences. Our soils, rivers and oceans are being polluted. A large percentage of plastic waste is still being incinerated, releasing huge quantities of toxins and CO2 emissions.

Nature works in cycles. Hence, we need to design our material cycles to close the loop. Plastic can be recycled in many ways and with little energy input. Plastic can be a sustainable raw material if we recycle it responsibly and utilise it in a manner that conserves resources. The circular economy paves the way to a sustainable future. Our goal is to massively increase the recycling rate so that waste no longer needs to be incinerated, CO2 emissions fall and our oceans and inland waters are protected from plastic waste.

"Man needs nature, nature does not need man. Man is part of nature, he is not superior to it. Only when he comprehends this will he have a chance of survival."
Richard von Weizsäcker

Waste and microplastics
3 actions for the solution...

... and what TTE® has to do with it.
Three simple steps can bring us a big step closer to solving our waste and microplastic problem:

reduce

In many countries, unnecessary plastic products such as disposable cutlery and ear sticks have already been banned from shops. And many manufacturers are switching to products without microplastics or to renewable raw materials on their own responsibility.

Reducing the proportion of plastic products wherever possible is step one in the fight against the flood of waste.

reuse

Products are coming to the end of their lives faster and faster. This causes vast amounts of waste.

With a long service life and the possibility of repair and reuse - as has been the case with TTE® for more than 25 years - less polluting plastic comes into circulation.

recycle

Not all waste can be avoided. If everyone separates their waste conscientiously, we can still close the circle.

Since 1995, the food packaging, yoghurt pots and other plastic waste that German households dispose of in the recycling waste has been turned into our solid TTE® floor grid. From 1995 to 2023, this corresponds to more than 79 million bags of plastic waste.

CO2-compensated production
through support for global sustainability projects

Since September 2021, we have been offsetting all emissions generated in the production of TTE® MultidrainPLUS.

Our first priority is always to avoid CO2 emissions and their equivalents in production. That is why we have always made the production of TTE® as low-energy as possible. However, CO2 equivalent emissions cannot be completely avoided as things stand today. That is why we offset the remaining emissions with our partner First Climate.

By buying emission certificates, we support a hydropower project in Turkiye and a wind power project in India. Both projects help to meet the countries' growing energy needs in a low-emission way.
We know that we cannot create a sustainable future with offsetting alone.

That is why our holistic climate protection strategy includes the following points:
  • Use of climate-friendly recycled material in the production of our products.
  • Reducing our CO2e emissions through continuous process optimisation in production, switching to our own solar power and green power suppliers and converting the company fleet to electric cars.
  • Compensation of the remaining emissions.
Yes, the two terms mean the same thing. Namely, that accruing emissions are offset via certified climate protection projects that avoid emissions elsewhere.

We decided to use the term CO2-compensated because we think it shows more honestly that we compensate for emissions and do not pretend that we produce emission-free. Unfortunately, we are not yet able to do that.
The topic of CO2 compensation is indeed extensive. We find that buying climate certificates that contribute to the global saving of greenhouse gases makes more sense than doing nothing at all. In doing so, we pay attention to high certification standards to be sure that our project complies with the principle of additionality. This means that the project would not have been realised without financing through CO2 certificates.

But what is true in any case: Even better than CO2 compensation is the avoidance of CO2. And here, too, we try to get a little better every day. For example, by generating about 55,000 kWh of electricity per year with our photovoltaic system and using it to power our computers.
We have a clear answer to this: yes. We have created a carbon footprint that has been verified by an independent third party and shows exactly how many emissions are generated in which area of our production and transport.

You can see the balance here. In 2021, for example, we had to offset 4,000 tonnes of CO2. That is not that much and shows that we are already on the right track in many areas.
Climate change is a global issue. So it is not crucial where emissions are reduced, but that they are reduced in order to curb global warming.

We have decided to support projects in the Global South and in Türkiye because the certificates are cheaper in these countries. Why is that good? Because we can make more of a difference in these countries with the same amount of money.

EPD Environmental Product Declaration
Environmental influences independently verified

What is the impact of building products on the environment? More and more architects and planners are asking themselves this question.

With our EPD Environmental Product Declaration, we offer an important planning tool to compare TTE® with other civil engineering products.

The EPD has been verified by the independent Institut Bauen und Umwelt (IBU) and maps all environmentally relevant emissions of the product cycle. In this way, a holistic CO2 balance can be shown for buildings.

The results of the life cycle assessment and our own calculations show that the production of TTE® MultidrainPLUS produces 85% less CO2 emissions than classic concrete pavers. Convincing, isn't it?

Avoiding microplastics

Thousands of marine animals die every year from carelessly discarded waste. The impact of microplastics on marine fauna is still difficult to assess.

By recycling plastics, HÜBNER-LEE is helping to ensure that this waste does not end up in the oceans.

Protecting plants, animals and people

Not only in the sea, but also on land, discarded waste is a danger to plants and animals. Recycling also has an effect here and preserves life on land.

In addition, TTE® supports groundwater recharge and thus protects an important basis for life.
